Dave found that the older boys needed a project…using the driveway gates as soccer goals was no longer a good idea as the iron rods on the gates were breaking. So, Dave took the boys down to the beach to look at the soccer goals at the Decamaron Hotel beach site. The boys measured the PVC pipe, drew up a plan and came up with the material list to buy at the ferretería. Money to purchase the materials came from Diane and John from Vancouver. The goals (portarías) were built and painted and now await completion by adding netting. We also found that the kids were interested in playing volleyball, so Dave asked Cobra Sports, the leading manufacturer of outdoor volleyball net systems in the US, for a donation of a couple of volleyball nets. They just emailed him back and stated that they will donate two systems! This is a value of $600 each! Gracias!! We are now looking for someone in the pueblo to work with the older niños, particularly the boys, to coordinate sports and activities. Keep tuned in to see who it may be!
Barbara and her amigas from Tlaquepaque came to do an art and flower project with los niños. They brought clay flower pots, pretty little things to decorate the pots and marigolds and basil to plant in them. The kids loved it.
We had our first special artist workshops with Danielle Théroux from Quebec teaching a series of three Water Color art classes. We started with mixing the primary colors, went into composition and had lots of fun with the techniques of applying color. She will return to La Casa next year and we will resume our classes. We definitely have some budding artists at La Casa de los Niños.
Dianne and John from Vancouver were here again this year to help with La Casa. John has given special help to Caesar since he first began coming to La Casa in 2005 and continues to enjoy being with the kids. Dianne is a great arts and crafts person and lends her expert advice as a nurse when needed. We had a showing of the movie “Juno” for the older girls with discussions afterwards about the issue of teenage pregnancy. Dulce, Dianne and Patti took the opportunity to inform the girls about important facts, discuss their feelings about the movie and its themes, and just have some fun with the girls!
We are saddened to learn that Dulce and Jim will be moving back to the States in the next few months. They will continue to be the corazón of La Casa de los Ninos as we experience the phenomenon of LCdlN’s growth. What a team we have been in establishing La Casa and will continue to be! Lo de Marcos and of all of us will miss Dulce and Jim! We will work very hard to provide the financial opportunity for them to come back often! Patti and Dave will “have” to be in Lo de Marcos more now…¡Qué lástima! But… it just won’t be the same without Dulce and Jim!
