Jump-Starting Activities

|
The last week of August a very hard rain storm hit our little pueblo (actually, it was the tail end of a hurricane) and La Casa didn't fare too well:
we ended up with almost two feet of standing water, mud and grime in the house and most everything that was on the floor, on bottom shelves or in bottom drawers--books, activity materials, notebooks,
paper supplies and computer components--was ruined. Estimates by the local dignitaries set the damages at over $7,000.
|
The kids were just chomping at the bit, waiting for activities to start (anywhere from two to eight kids stopped by our house every day to ask when
La Casa de los Niņos was going to be open again). So, when we did re-open September 1, the first order of business was
to get things cleaned up. After pumping out the sludge, the kids, Dulce and some hired help spent more than a week cleaning, painting and putting things back in order.

And, as so often has occurred, just at that moment, our teacher Karen wrote us to say that Werner, a friend of hers, had sent a $5,000 donation to
La Casa de los Niņos . It could not have arrived a more opportune time! Of course, Werner did not know anything about our loss,
but it was absolutely marvellous to receive this help just when we needed it most. Thank you so much, Werner.

So now things are almost back to normal at La Casa de los Niņos . Trini, our new helper/teacher/activity director, began working with us at the beginning of
the month and the kids love her already!
A personal letter to all our volunteers:
