Goodbye... Already!?!

Gonzalo teaches jewelry-making
Believe it or not, it is time that many of our volunteers begin their trek northward. We had a special Goodbye Pot Luck at Tlaquepaqe. It was another season that we enjoyed together and La Casa de los Niņos truly benefitted from the loving effort of our volunteers. The children learned special jewelry making techniques this year with the help of Herzie Aslankhani, a family friend of David, Patti and Willie, and they were able to make earrings and bracelets for the ladies as a special thank you to take home.
A family of volunteers from Alaska initiated a Pen Pal Letter exchange with a classroom of children from Alaska. We received art work and letters from the children. The kids at La Casa were able to have fun practicing their new English skills by reading and responding to these letters.
When the numbers of volunteers change so dramatically at this time, it is an opportunity for some different types of activities. With Dulce's help, the children are using the internet to research animals from around the world. Gonzalo, a jeweler from Peru, spoke to the children about the materials that mother nature provides, then taught the kids how to use bones of fish, seeds from local trees, palms, shells, pebbles, oil coconut seeds and other findings to make jewelry.

ZZ has a birthday party
We were so lucky to have Mary and MaryAnne here with us to help organize our books and reading program. A librarian comes in very handy. They had the brilliant idea of hanging the books along the wall from a thick piece of twine so the children can see them and put them back easily. It is working so well! Much thanks to them.
We had a birthday party for ZZ, a visiting girl from China. She and Kendall, her mom, came to La Casa and taught the children how to make Chinese Lanterns (which are used in the celebration of the Chinese New Year). ZZ had her birthday while she was here and we made cards, a piņata, sang Las Maņanitas and Happy Birthday and ate birthday cake. Wow, that was fun!
