A Student's Life
The kids are making great progress in their English classes and most have mastered basic conversational phrases such as common greetings and responses, as well as learning the months of the year, days of the week and other vocabulary related to school, home and family. English pronunciation is difficult for the native Spanish speaker, but our teachers seem to have endless patience and the kids endless enthusiasm, so the students have learned a lot in a very short time.
Outside Class
Not everything at La Casa de los Niņos is work, of course. Besides the educationally-oriented classes and activities, students can play board games, watch movies or join in physical recreation, such as badminton, sand-lot soccer or beach volleyball. And, if they are really good, maybe their teacher will take them on a ride in his sidecar motorcycle!
Fernandito el Toro
Kathryn Hoffer, concertmaster of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra (Alaska) , was visiting Puerto Vallarta to help with that ciy's newly formed Chamber Orchestra and, thanks to the efforts of Rebecca, Kathryn agreed to do a presentation here in Lo de Marcos. La Casa de los Niņos worked with the city Delegado (Representative) to reserve the plaza and obtain power sources for the sound equipment to be used in the concert.
I translated the original lyrics (written by Munro Leaf) into Spanish and Dulce did the narration as Kathryn, who is an outstanding violinist, did a solo interpretation of Alan Ridout's short operetta, "Ferdinand the Bull". Following the presentation, students from La Casa de los Niņos sang songs learned in their English classes, including a rousing, hand-clapping version of "The Hoky Poky". About 200 students, parents and local residents really had a good time!
